Growth Form: Small trees or shrubs.

Stems: Stems branched or unbranched, smaller ones with annular leaf scars.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Spirally arranged toward the ends of the branches. Blades linear to lanceolate or elliptic. Margins entire. Veins parallel. Petioles enlarged at base into a sheath. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in racemes or spikes, these arranged in large paniculate inflorescences, glabrous, pedunculate. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Tepals 6,–connate or coherent at base, the lobes becoming strongly reflexed, equal or inner ones slightly longer. Stamens 6. Ovary superior, 3-celled; ovules 4 to numerous per cell; style filiform; stigma capitate or 3-lobed.

Fruit: Globose or 3–lobed; fleshy; dehiscent or tardily dehiscent capsules. Seeds black; glossy; obovoid; compressed.
